Police in Limassol say two fans of APOEL were detained on Wednesday evening after a fire broke out in the stands of the Tsirio Stadium during their team’s Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup clash against AEL.

Fire fighters and police were forced to enter the stands being occupied by the travelling APOEL fans after a fire broke out in the stands. Some scuffles ensued before a 21-year-old man from Larnaca and a 37-year-old man from Nicosia were placed under arrest.

Both men were taken to Limassol Police Station where they were charged.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw with APOEL booking their place in the semi-final stage of the competition where they will now join Apollon Limassol, Anorthosis and Doxa in Thursday’s draw.

Acts of hooliganism are not uncommon when it comes to sports games in Cyprus. Earlier this week, a basketball game between APOEL and Petrolina AEK was stopped after fans began hurling objects onto the court.
