Police arrest Paphos man in connection with fires

A 73-year-old from a village in the Paphos District has been arrested on suspicion of setting a fire in Kritou Terra.

The 73-year-old was seen leaving the scene of the fire on his tractor just after it broke out in the early hours and is also being investigated for the fires in Polis Chrysochous on Saturday.

The fire that erupted in Ktrou burned three decares of wild vegetation. A decare is a metric unit of area equal to 10 ares or 0.2471 acres.

Saturday’s fires burned wild growth and trees by the Paphos village of Goudi, in a hard to reach area near the village of Skoulli and also included two new break-outs, in Kritou Terra and Droushia as firefighters were already battling the first blaze.

Saturday’s fires destroyed a total of 12 hectares, according to the Fire Service.

Meanwhile a fire in the Zexi area of Lythrodontas was brought under control just over an hour after breaking out at around 3.15pm but only after it had destroyed six hectares of private land covered with pine trees, olives, hay bales and  vegetation.

Forty men from the Forestry Department and Fire Service, with 15 firefighting vehicles, two aircraft belonging to the Forestry Department and a police helicopter helped put out the fire.
