Firefighters were on Saturday afternoon battling a new blaze in Polis Chrysochous.
According to the information at hand, the fire started in a ravine between the communities of Goudi and Drousia.
By around 3pm the fire had been confined to two fronts although the battle continues with strong winds making the battle harder and a new front emerged between Kritou Terra and Goudi at 4.30pm and 10 minutes later near Goudi, pionting to the fires being set deliberately.
By 3pm, some six hectars of wild brush had been destroyed.
Twelve firefighting vehicles beloning to the Fire Service and two to the Forestry Department were on the scene with backup from Limassol also called to the scene.
The efforts of the ground forces are also aided by Forestry Department planes of the Department of Forests, as well as the fire-fighting helicopters hired by the state.
The flames had begun approaching homes on the outskirts of Goudi with inhabitants trying to protect their property by all means. In some places the situation is particularly difficult, as the smoke is dense.
