The fire that was blazing in the Vasiliko Power Station near Limassol has been brought under control.
Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) spokeswoman, Christina Papadopoulou, announced that the fire had been brought under control at around 6pm and had been contained in unit 3 of the plant.
Papadopoulou stressed that the supply of electricity had remained uninterrupted throughout the time the fire was burning and that the damage caused would not affect the supply of electricity.
The fire broke out during welding and spread to nearby flammable materials and the power plant’s tower.
The immediate response of the Fire Services who arrived on the scene with six fire trucks attributed to the containment of the fire and preventing a black-out.
The Vasiliko Power Station was impacted by the July 11, 2011 explosion at Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in nearby Mari, when 98 containers of explosives that had been stored for over two years in the baking sun.
Thirteen people died and some 60 were injured as a result. The explosion severely damaged hundreds of nearby buildings including all of the buildings in Zygi and Vasiliko, the island’s largest power station, responsible for supplying over half of Cyprus’ electricity.
