The community leader of Kakopetria has called on the state to foot the bill for a fire that destroyed a building housing historical pictures and books documenting the Troodos village.
Speaking to state radio on Tuesday, community leader Ioannis Iacovides said that a fire had destroyed the old community council building that had since been used as a library to store old books and pictures documenting the history of the popular village.
The building had also been used as an old market.
“This entire piece of historical documentation has been destroyed,” he said. “This fire was caused by negligence and, to be more specific, by the negligence of employees of the Department of Public Works that had been doing construction work on the building. That is why it is the state that needs to compensate our village.”
According to a report by the Fire Services, the blaze was caused when one of the workers attempted to light a fire at the fireplace. The fire quickly spread and the flames soon consumed the building.
