The European Commission is reportedly about to green-light €7.3million from its EU Solidarity Fund assistance to help Cyprus cushion the impact from the summer fire that tore through the Solea area of Troodos.

The damage caused by the June fires has been estimated at €101.4 million, or 0.6% of the Gross National Income.

According to sources of Phileleftheros, Brussels was poised to approve Cyprus’ request for help. It has also been evaluating whether 10% of the €7,298,760 total amount allocated to Cyprus could be paid up earlier.

“An EU source told Phileleftheros that the Solidarity Fund’s support could be used to cover immediate rehabilitation needs, including the clearing of natural areas,” the paper said.

Beginning on June 19 and raging for days before being finally brought under control, the Troodos fires burnt 18.5 square kilometres of lush forest areas.

Two fire-fighters died after their vehicle overturned during the battle against the blaze while other emergency services personnel were also treated for injuries.
