The residents of a central Limassol block of flats were evacuated early on Tuesday morning following an explosion and fire at a betting shop on the ground floor.
According to the police, the blast occurred at around 5am. The quick intervention of the Fire Service prevented flames from the resulting fire from reaching the flats above the betting shop. The building’s residents, however, had to be evacuated due to thick smoke.
“The shop was completely destroyed by the fire caused by the explosion,” said Limassol CID Chief Ioannis Sotiriades.
Investigations into the cause of the Nicodemou Mylonas Street blast revealed that those responsible had placed a high explosive device on the west side of the betting shop while dousing the inside of the shop with flammable material.
“It’s a serious incident which is being carefully investigated,” said Sotiriades adding that police were questioning a number of people with regards to the explosion.
