Firefighters were mobilised just outside of Limassol on Sunday following two fires in the area – one of which caused extensive damage to olive trees and wild shrubs close to the village of Lofou.
According to an announcement by the Fire Services, the first wildfire consumed a field close to Lofou while another fire – close to Parekklisia village and Mazokampos – destroyed four hectares of private land.
Media reports claim that two men – who had been hunting in the area close to Lofou – were caught unaware of the blaze and needed to be rescued after they almost became engulfed by the flames.
The blaze destroyed over a square kilometre of wild shrubbery and dry grass and seven fire engines are already in the area. Firefighters from the Game Service and Forestry Department were also at the scene.
Two helicopters were also dispatched to the area and around 80 people were in the area close to Lofou helping to extinguish the fire.
