Vandals over the weekend targeted a primary school in the Nicosia district community of Pera Chorio Nisou, the most recent in an increasing number of similar incidents.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, the vandals set fire to tyres placed under a bench directly outside one of the classrooms. They then threw spray paint canisters onto the fire, causing explosions that were heard by a resident of the area who in turn alerted the police.
The Fire Service managed to put out the fire before it spread to inside of the classroom but not before the intense heat shattered the windows while damage was also caused to the classroom’s exterior walls.
The bench was completely destroyed.
Before setting the blaze, the vandals had targeted some of the school’s walls with graffiti, including Swastika symbols.
This was not the first time the school had been vandalised and, according to the authorities, there have been an increasing number of similar incidents around Cyprus raising discussion over what kind of action should be taken to prevent them in the future.
