A fire has caused significant damage to the Leda Lions Club in old Nicosia, with police and fire services officials yet to rule out foul play.
The Lions Club – a popular club in Cyprus involved in many different events throughout the island – is part of Lions Clubs International and is considered the world’s largest service club organisation with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.
Fire Services Spokesperson Andreas Kettis said reports came in of a fire on Lefkonos Street at 5.30am prompting fire engines to be dispatched to the area as the blaze threatened to spread to neighbouring buildings.
The fire was finally put out at around 7am.
“There has been significant damage to the building itself and in particular the restaurant and to some areas of the garden,” Kettis told The Cyprus Weekly.
“We managed to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. It is too early to know if the fire has been started deliberately or not. We are working alongside Nicosia CID and the Electromechanical Services to establish if the fire was due to arson.”
