Police say several fires that were put out at the Academia Park in Nicosia on Monday were most likely started deliberately.
Firefighters were called to the popular park in the Aglandjia area of Nicosia at around 2.15pm on Monday following reports of a fire in an area close to the ‘Filoxenia’.

Fire Services officials later discovered that fires had been deliberately started in five different areas within a one-kilometre radius in the park.
“The fires were brought under control by around 2.30pm,” read a statement by the Fire Services. “Only dry grass was destroyed while six officers from the Fire Services and Forestry Department were dispatched to the scene along with two vehicles.”
“We are looking into the possibility that these fires were started deliberately.”
