A holiday residence in Pomos is out of the woods after a fire broke out on the ground floor that could have destroyed the two-storey house entirely.

The home owners, who were staying there at the time during their summer break, became aware of the fire quickly and called the police in Polis Chrysochous, Paphos.

Two fire trucks rushed to the scene and put out the fire that had spread to two rooms, just before it could do further damage.

A preliminary assessment pointed to a dryer that was operating at the time and might have overheated, according to police, who also suspected a short-circuit fault.

The fire caused damages in the pantry room, where the washer and dryer are kept, but no cost estimate has been made available yet.

Authorities are carrying on with their investigation.

Below are some tips on how to prevent a fire caused by a dryer. But this list is not exhaustive and users should consult the manual or the merchant to ensure proper installation and use of a dryer.

  • Clean the lint filter after each load of laundry.
  • Make sure the air exhaust is not restricted and does not have animal nests blocking vent pipe.
  • Don’t overload the dryer! Overloading the dryer can also add to the amount of lint in the dryer, which in turn can create a fire.
  • Turn off the dryer when your leave your home or are going to bed because a fire could start in your dryer when you are not available to attend to it.
  • Dryers should be properly grounded and plugged into the correct plug or outlet, not an extension cord.
