Nineteen fire-fighting vehicles and aircraft and their personnel on Wednesday afternoon were battling a fire in the area between the Larnaca district villages of Ora and Vavatsinia.
At 6.15pm, the blaze was still raging out of control, a Fire Service spokesman said.
The fire crews are made up of seven Fire Service vehicles, five belonging to the Forestry Department, one belonging to the Game Fund, and one to Ora Community Council’s Civil Defence unit, as well as five aircraft battling the blaze from above.
Residential areas are not anticipated to be in any danger by the fire but it has already destroyed stretches of wild brush and pine and olive trees.
Fire-fighting efforts have been made more difficult by strong winds in the area, which have also been changing direction.
